I Timothy 1:7
Dealing with Depression

Depression

Depression is Caused by Fear

    • 1 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

    • Romans 8:15 “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.””

    • Philippians 4:6-7  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

    • Ephesians 4:26-27  “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.”

Depression causes isolation

    • Proverbs 18:1 "A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment."

    • Genesis 2:18  “And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

Depression causes Self-Centeredness

    • Hebrews 10:24-25 "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

    • Philippians 2: 3-4 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

How to Overcome Depression

Accept Faith in God

    • Romans 5:1-2  "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand."

Accept Hope in God

    • Romans 5:2-3  "And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

Accept Love in God

    • Romans 5:5  "And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
  • Romans 5:8-10  "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"
