Deuteronomy 28
To Obey or Not to Obey

Obedience Brings;

Deuteronomy 28:1 “Carefully obey the Lord your God, and faithfully follow all his commands that I’m giving you today.

If you do, the Lord your God will place you high above all the other nations in the world.

These are all the blessings that will come to you and stay close to you because you obey the Lord your God.”

Disobedience Brings;

Verse 43,

“The standard of living for the foreigners who live among you will rise higher and higher, while your standard of living will sink lower and lower.

They will be able to make loans to you, but you won’t be able to make loans to them.

They will be the head, and you will be the tail.

All these curses will come to you.

They will pursue you and stay close to you until you’re destroyed, because you didn’t obey the Lord your God or follow his commands and laws, which I’m giving you.

These curses will be a sign, and an amazing thing to warn you and your descendants forever.

You didn’t serve the Lord your God with a joyful and happy heart when you had so much.

So, you will serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you.

You will serve them even though you are already hungry, thirsty, naked, and in need of everything.

The Lord will put a heavy burden of hard work on you until he destroys you

The Lord will bring against you a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth.

The nation will swoop down on you like an eagle.

It will be a nation whose language you won’t understand.

Its people will be fierce-looking. They will show no respect for the old, and no pity for the young.

They’ll eat the offspring of your animals and the crops from your fields until you’re destroyed.

They’ll leave you no grain, no new wine, no olive oil, no calves from your herds, and no lambs or kids from your flocks.

They’ll continue to do this until they’ve completely ruined you.”

“…because you didn’t obey the Lord your God or follow his commands and laws… these curses will be a sign, and an amazing thing to warn you and your descendants forever.

That you didn’t serve the Lord your God with a joyful and happy heart when you had so much.”

1 Peter 4:17

"The season of judgment has begun, and it began with God’s own household.

If it begins this way with us, what must be the end for those who refuse obedience to the gospel of God?"

The Obvious Choice

Psalms 1:1-6

“Blessed is the person who obeys the law of the Lord.

They don’t follow the advice of evil people.

They don’t make a habit of doing what sinners do.

They don’t join those who make fun of the Lord and his law.

Instead, the law of the Lord gives them joy.

They think about his law day and night.

That kind of person is like a tree that is planted near a stream of water.

It always bears its fruit at the right time.

Its leaves don’t dry up. Everything godly people do turns out well.

Sinful people are not like that at all.

They are like straw that the wind blows away.

When the Lord judges them, their life will come to an end.

Sinners won’t have any place among those who are godly.

The Lord watches over the lives of godly people. But the lives of sinful people will lead to their death.

"But understand this: there will be terrifying times in the last days.

People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power.

Reject them."
